Some of the most notable icons in New Yorkdescended on Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre last Thursday to attend and perform at Love Rocks NYC! The fundraising gala included performances by 25 legendary musicians including Keith Richards, Ziggy Marley, Norah Jones, Mavis Staples, and Emmylou Harris who came together to raise millions for New York charity, God’s Love We Deliver.
A New Tradition
The sold-out event was the second annual benefit concert for God’s Love We Deliver which is celebrating its 33rd year in operation. Founded in 1985, God’s Love We Deliver is New York City metropolitan area’s leading provider of meals for people who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves. All of the meals are provided free of charge to clients, their children, and their caregivers with the majority of clients living below the poverty line and 70% residing in some of New York City’s poorest and most underserved neighborhoods. God’s Love We Deliver believes that the combination of hunger and serious illness is a crisis and their mandate is to deliver meals within 24 to 48 hours of being contacted.
The organization began with one woman who started delivering food to a man dying from AIDS and it has grown to provide more than 6,600 meals daily for people afflicted with life-altering illnesses. God’s Love We Deliver believes that “food as medicine” and meals are tailored to each specific client with the help of registered dieticians. A small team of professional staff and 10,000 volunteers enable the organization to deliver 1.6 million meals free of charge each year.
Love Rocks NYC! was co-presented by fashion designer, John Varvatos, and top NYC real estate broker, Greg Williamson who created the event out of their shared passion for music and God’s Love We Deliver. Williamson and Varvatos curated the musical line up with a focus on representing both iconic and lesser-known artists. Host Whoopi Goldberg kicked off the evening with an inspirational and informative address that spoke to the impact that God’s Love We Deliver makes on the lives of people living with serious illnesses.
Other notable events of the evening included a guest appearance by Bill Murray who appeared onstage to encourage attendees to donate to God’s Love We Deliver. Murray’s request was met with enthusiasm with attendees rushing the stage to shower the actor with cash donations. The evening concluded with all the artists coming together onstage to join Ziggy Marley for a performance of “One Love.”
