People’s health is their private business. However, if one chooses to take time off from work due to mental health, then this may not be kept private. Many people choose to take mental health days off without their employer knowing.
It is estimated that 20 percent of people in America are living with a mental illness. Treatment for mental illness can be up to 80 percent effective. However, less than half of people choose to get help for a mental health condition. Fear of losing job, social stigma and a lack of affordable care are some of the reasons that people do not seek help for mental health problems.
The workplace does not cause mental illness. However, people who work long hours and sit down for long periods of time are more likely to develop a mental illness. Loss of time with loved ones, a lack of time to exercise and substance misuse can also lead to mental illness.
If you need to take a mental health day, then it is important for you to inform the HR department and your manager. You do not have to share any information that you do not want to. You can also keep your diagnosis private. If you have a long-term disability, then you will likely need to provide a note from your doctor.
You will also need to know about your rights. The American With Disabilities Act prevents people from discriminating against people because of their mental health condition or disability. Major depressive disorder and bipolar are covered under this act.
Keep in mind that talking about mental illness can help other people. There is a lot of shame surrounding mental illness, which is why many people do not get help. If you are open about your condition, then more people will be compelled to get help.
