New Restaurant Serves All Healthy Foods To Schools


Juici Patties is a restaurant that is many Jamaican schools. The restaurant’s goal is to make it easy for people to get access to healthy foods. Jamaican schools have been concerned about the rising obesity rate. A 2017 survey showed that 9 percent of students in Jamaica were obese. Twenty-four percent of students were overweight.

Obesity rates were higher among female students. Poor diet is one of the main reasons for the high obesity rate. Sixty-eight percent of students drank a carbonated beverage every day. Fifty percent of students ate fast food at least once a week. Inactivity is another major problem among students in Jamaica. Twenty percent of students stated that they sat for at least eight hours every day.

Healthcare providers, parents and teachers have voiced their concerns about this. They blamed the fast food restaurants for the rising obesity rate. Ruel Reid is an education minister. He stated that it is important to educate students about making the right choices when it comes to nutrition. He also stated that more needs to be done in order to address sedentary lifestyles.

Ruel Reid stated that more schools will have a Juice Patties by the end of 2017. This restaurant offers people a wide variety of healthy foods such as banana, sweet potatoes, yams and fish. A spokesperson for Juici Patties stated that they are not a fast food chain. They also stated that they know they have the power to influence change.

Juici Patties will comply to the nutritional standards that are set by the education minister. Dr. Alfred Dawes is an obesity surgeon. He has criticized the company.
