There are medical experts who work at the University of Georgia who conducted studies to see just how a lack of sleep impacts the body. They want adults to know that sleeping isn’t just something that takes up time or that is meant for recuperating energy that is spent during the day.

Adequate amounts of sleep can help to fight off illnesses in the body and boost the immune system. You can think clearly during the day and get more done. Adults should get about six to eight hours of sleep each night. If you don’t get enough sleep, then you’re more susceptible to colds and other illnesses. It’s harder to fight infections that develop, which will make you sick for longer periods of time. When you’re sick more often, it can lead to time taken off of work that results in less money that is earned for the family.

When you don’t get enough sleep at night, you might feel stressed out during the day. It’s easier to gain weight because you’re trying to compensate for a lack of energy by eating foods that are sugary or by drinking coffee, tea, and sodas. Depression and anxiety are seen more in those who don’t get enough sleep. When you drive drowsy, there is an increased risk of being in a car accident. Your clarity isn’t as good as it could be, which could result in mistakes at work or not being able to get as much work done around the house as you normally would. Sleep deprivation effects can be seen in those who only get about six hours of sleep.
