Colin Kaepernick and his supporters are once again in the news, this time for directly attempting to pressure the NFL for Kaepernick to have a place on a football team. His current supporters, which includes the NAACP, former and present members of the New York City Police Department and more. Kaepernick has been struggling for months after deciding to not resigning his contract with the San Francisco 49ers. He is also responsible for his one-man protest every week on the side lines of football games, in which Kaepernick was kneeling during the national anthem. There are two sides of this issue: one side stating that Kaepernick is disrespectful to the United States and the other side is saying that what Kaepernick is doing is a large statement for the oppression of people of color.
This isn’t the end of the story, as fans are gaining attention through a Change.org petition where it states that no matter how important the sport is, what Kaepernick is doing is more important. Having a goal of 200,000 supporters, the petition states varies things that include Kaepernick’s donations to charity, along with a statistic that says 70% of the NFL is African American. As of writing this, the petition has nearly 173,000 supporters, along with updates stating that within a week they reached the halfway point and had mailed the list of supporters to the NFL owners along with the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
To this point, Kaepernick is yet to be in any communication with a team. This drama has made an impact on the sport itself, as teams are struggling with filling the spot of quarterback. With this being a struggle, many are believing that Kaepernick has a possibility of being signed to a team that is in need of his position, along with the need for his incredible skill. Teams such as the Ravens, Dolphins and Giants were in contact with Kaepernick at various points in time. However, not once did anyone considers him for an actual workout to make the team. This has lead to the idea that teams are not only afraid of the stigma that Kaepernick is creating but also that organizations are planning to hire less capable players instead of him altogether. This is where many fans and supporters believe that Kaepernick is being ‘blackballed’ from the sport. Teams are not only afraid that controversy can enter their team but also the fear of losing the support of their fans such as the Giants; in this case, Giants fans were calling for a boycott of their own if Kaepernick joined the team.
It is possible that Kaepernick still has a chance to sign with a team; however, there will be drawbacks and stigma that follows. It is also possible that the NFL will continue to counteract the protest and neglect to sign Kaepernick. No matter what happens, both parties are going to see consequences no matter what decision is made.
