How Does Cold Weather Affect The Flu Season?


Arizona is one of the states that has been hit hard by the flu season. There 10,000 flu cases in Maricopa County. Employees are missing work due to the flu. This is taking a toll on the workplace.

Commonwealth Casualty has 90 employees. Yara Patino is the insurance company’s director of of operations. She stated that it is normal to have 10 to 15 people missing work every day. The company has been doing everything that they can to help fight sickness. They have been using Lysol and passing out Emergen-C to employees. They have also been giving people more sick days so that they will not be forced to come into work and infect other people.

Commonwealth Casualty has not been able to get as much work done as they like. They had a percentage that they wanted to maintain. However, they have not been able to reach their goals because of absent employees.

Dr. Natasha Bhuyan works at the One Medical Group. She stated that she is surprised by how many flu cases the clinic has seen this year. Dr. Bhuyan also stated that flu season typically peaks in the middle of February. Doctors believe that this has something to do with the warm weather.

Dr. Bhuyan stated that there are fewer flu cases and deaths when the weather is warm. The virus has a protective layer that fares better in the cold weather. However, doctors stated that it is important to take the steps necessary to prevent the flu regardless of the temperature outside.

They recommend that you get the flu shot if you have not already. This year’s flu vaccine has had a high failure rate. However, doctors recommend getting it because the risk of serious complications. You will also need to keep your hands clean.
